10 Laundry Hacks That Work and Save Time

Laundry Hacks

When I first searched the internet for laundry hacks, it seemed like everyone was sharing some kind of 'magic' trick that promised to save time, reduce effort, and make clothes shine. But the truth is, most of these hacks are just talk—they don't actually work, because they have nothing to do with clothing care.

So I thought, why not share the laundry hacks that I've personally tested — simple, honest, and truly effective. These hacks will not only save you time and money, but will also keep your clothes fresh, clean, and lasting — just like a pro.

The Magic of Vinegar in Laundry - Tried and Tested by Me!

Bottle of vinegar on the laundry basket

If you have a bottle of white vinegar lying around in your kitchen, just know that you have a hidden laundry hero! The first time I used vinegar in my laundry, I couldn’t believe how such an inexpensive household item could do such amazing things for my clothes.

Now I keep a separate bottle just for laundry—especially for whites, it really works like magic!

Here I’m sharing with you the easy methods I use myself:

For softness and shine:

Add a cup of white vinegar to the final rinse cycle of every wash. It removes detergent residue, leaves clothes feeling soft and clean, and reduces the risk of skin irritation.

Say goodbye to bad odors:

If your clothes are sweaty or smelly, add 1 cup of vinegar during the wash. It kills odors at the root - especially great for towels or gym clothes.

Remove hemline marks:

Sometimes when I change the length of clothes, the old hemline leaves a noticeable mark. Just add a little vinegar and rub gently - it helps to gently remove these marks.

Deodorize your washer:

If your front-load washer starts to smell bad, run a hot water cycle with 2 cups of vinegar. For mild odors, this works perfectly. If it's really strong, you may need a more powerful cleaner.

My advice

Vinegar is natural, affordable, and effective. The best part? It won't ruin your clothes. So give vinegar a try the next time you do laundry. Like me, you might fall in love with it too!

Missing socks? Not anymore! (I found the solution)

Missing socks

I don’t know if it happens to you, but every time I do laundry, I always end up losing a pair or two. It’s like there’s a secret portal in my washing machine where they disappear!

Then I tried a simple trick — a mesh laundry bag. And believe me, my socks have been coming back in pairs ever since!

Here’s what I do:

  • I put the kids’ socks and other small items (like handkerchiefs or underwear) in the mesh bag.
  • Then I put the entire bag in the washing machine — and then straight into the dryer.

The result? No more missing socks, no more weird mismatches, and everything stays together — easy, organized, and hassle-free!

My advice

If you’re tired of counting your socks after every wash, get yourself a mesh laundry bag. It's a small solution that makes a big difference!

Baking Soda - The Silent Hero of My Laundry!

baking soda on the table

As soon as I discovered the benefits of baking soda, I immediately decided that it was a must-have not only for the refrigerator, but also for the laundry! Now I always keep a box for the kitchen and one for the laundry room.

What I love about baking soda is that it enhances the performance of my laundry products - and in some cases, even replaces them!

Here are some ways to use baking soda:

  • Keep towels soft but absorbent: Have you ever noticed that fabric softener makes towels soft, but they become less absorbent? I solved this problem with baking soda. Just add a tablespoon of baking soda during the wash - the towels are not only soft, but also super absorbent.
  • Power boost with bleach: Whenever I use bleach, I also add a cup of baking soda to the wash water. It doubles the power of bleach — clothes come out cleaner, whiter, and smell better!
  • Iron cleaning? No scratches: My iron's bottom plate often had a build-up of grime. I made a light baking soda paste and gently scrubbed it away. The iron looked brand new without a single scratch!

My experience

Baking soda is cheap, natural, and versatile. If you're only keeping it for baking, be sure to set aside a second box for laundry. You'll be grateful — as I am every time my clothes come out shiny and smelling great!

Easy Ways to Dry Clothes Quickly – When Time Is Short!

Dry Clothes in dryer

Sometimes you have to wear a certain item of clothing and find that it’s been left in the laundry. Not only do you have to wash it right away, but you also have to dry it quickly — and that’s the biggest problem.

So here’s a trick that always helps me:

Whenever I need to dry a garment quickly, I put it in the dryer with two large dry towels. The towels absorb the excess moisture and the garment dries much faster than before.

And if you washed it by hand?

Then there’s another favorite tip of mine — the kitchen spinner!

Yes, the one used to squeeze water out of salads. I’ve put my shirts or other light-weight items in it and wrung it out several times, and it’s surprisingly effective! No need to wring, no damage to the fabric, and plenty of water comes out.

My experience

When time is short and clothes are needed urgently, these little hacks are truly life-savers! Try them out, and I'm sure you'll say to yourself: "I should have known this already!"

Wrinkled Shirt. Make magic with ice

ice cubes in the dryer

It happens to me often — I’m in a hurry, and when I open the closet to get dressed, my favorite shirt is full of wrinkles. No time to iron it!

But then I tried a simple, brilliant trick. Ice cubes!

Yes, the same ones you use to drink cold water.

Here’s my tried and true method:

  • Remove all the clothes from the dryer and add only the shirt that has wrinkles.
  • Add 2 to 3 ice cubes.
  • Run the dryer on high heat for at least 10 minutes.

When the dryer stops, immediately take the shirt out and hang it on a hanger. Smooth out collars, cuffs, and seams with your hands.

As the ice melts, it creates steam, which naturally smooths out wrinkles in your clothes — just like a steam iron.

My experience

This tip has really saved me a lot of time, especially when I have to get ready for the office or an event and I'm really pressed for time. Now I always keep a few ice cubes by the dryer!

You should try this trick too — and if possible, don't tell anyone, so they think you're "always ready."

Leaving Notes on Laundry Day

Leaving Notes on Laundry Day

My laundry room isn’t very big—but it definitely has a professional touch!

I always use a whiteboard marker (in cute, colorful shades!) to leave little notes right on the lid of the washing machine or dryer.

For example:

“Don’t put these clothes in the dryer!” or “Do not wash this on the hot setting!”

This really helps when I ask my kids or someone else to do the laundry. They don’t always know all the details—and these small notes save my laundry from turning into a disaster.

Wiping off the notes? Super easy!

  • A whiteboard cleaner or even an old cloth works fine.
  • If there’s a bit of marker residue, just use some rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth—wipes off easily!
  • Got stubborn stains?
  • Mix baking soda with rubbing alcohol to form a paste, and gently rub with a soft cloth.
  • Or just use a melamine sponge (like a magic eraser)—it’ll make the surface look brand new!

My experience

This little laundry hack has truly been a game changer for me. Not only do my notes look neat and colorful, but my kids actually pay attention to them (most of the time).

So next time you do laundry, grab a marker and create your own little “note board”—simple, cute, and super useful!

How to Save a Sweater With Conditioner

sweater shrunk on the bed

Sometimes there are ‘accidents’ in the laundry — it happened to me too!

My favorite wool sweater accidentally went into a hot dryer, and when it came out, it looked like a child’s size.

At first, I was hesitant, but then I tried a great remedy. And believe me, the sweater came back almost exactly the same!

Here’s my tried-and-true method:

  • Take a bucket of cold water.
  • Add about 1 tablespoon of hair conditioner to it (the same one we use after a shower).
  • Put the shrunken sweater in this water and soak it for at least 30 minutes.

The special thing about the conditioner is that it softens the wool fibers — and then you can easily pull the sweater back to its original shape.

Note

Don’t pull too hard, gently adjust the size to your needs.

Afterwards, dry the sweater on a towel, so that it regains its new shape.

My Opinion

I was really happy with this tip! Not only did my sweater survive, but I felt like I had learned a little magic! If you have a sweater that shrinks too — try this recipe.

The Ultimate Dryer Sheet Savings Trick

I use dryer sheets every time I do laundry — they make clothes soft and smell great. But let’s be honest, they’re a bit pricey, especially when used daily.

So what did I do?

I started cutting each of my dryer sheets in half!

Yes, the easy solution — and trust me, half sheets work just as well. If you have a slightly larger load of laundry, just throw in two half sheets — full benefit, half the cost!

Another quick tip

If you ever run out of dryer sheets and your clothes start to stick together due to static cling. Don’t panic!

Just roll up a small ball of aluminum foil and throw it in the dryer.

This will reduce the static charge and keep your clothes separate.

(Just make the ball as smooth as possible so as not to damage the clothes, especially delicate ones.)

My experience: This little hack not only saves money but also saves lives when you have nothing and are in a hurry.

Lost Socks and Underwear Found

Lost Socks in washing machine

If you’re like me, and you’re left with half a pair of socks or a missing pair of underwear after every load of laundry, it’s a big mystery.

We often blame the dryer — but the truth is, our washing machine can be the culprit too!

Yes, those lost clothes often get stuck between the cracks in the inner tub and walls of the washer.

Do you use a front-loading washer? Then take a good look between the rubber door gasket and the drum.

You’d be surprised what’s hiding there! Socks, small underwear, sometimes even coins or children’s toys!

Tip

Check your washer’s user manual (owner’s book) so you know how to access those black holes — especially if you want to remove the gasket.

Believe me, once I looked under my washer gasket and found three of my brother's missing socks, a hairpin stuck in my hair, and a missing baby's sock.
