About Run-On Sentences

A run-on sentence occurs when two or more independent clauses are joined without appropriate punctuation or conjunctions.

How to Fix Run-On Sentences

There are several ways to correct run-on sentences:

Example of a run-on sentence:

I love to write papers I would write one every day if I had the time.

1. Use a period

Separate the clauses into two sentences.

Corrected:

I love to write papers. I would write one every day if I had the time.

2. Use a semicolon

Use a semicolon to join closely related independent clauses.

Corrected:

I love to write papers; I would write one every day if I had the time.

3. Use a comma with a conjunction

Use a comma followed by a coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so).

Corrected:

I love to write papers, and I would write one every day if I had the time.

4. Use a subordinating conjunction

Turn one of the independent clauses into a dependent clause.

Corrected:

Because I love to write papers, I would write one every day if I had the time.
